The Juxtaposition Between Loss and Growth
Winter greetings, my friend ~
I recently heard a reference to the month of January as a very long decade. I found this levity to be validating of my own experience of the start of 2026.
In spite of the knowledge I possess as a therapist whose scope of practice includes grief and loss, when it’s personal, it hits differently. I often describe myself as aging perfectly into my chosen career, because as I move through my own life journey, I experience things I’ve been talking about with clients for many years.
The loss of my beloved mother-in-law at the beginning of this year evoked intense emotion in me as I mourned her cherished presence in my life. She was deeply loved, and because of her blessed longevity, she represented a link to the past for many people. I viscerally felt the end of an era with her passing, leaving me with a persistent sense of having the wind knocked out of me.
The start of 2026 greeted me with the juxtaposition between loss and growth. It is a potent reminder of the human capacity to hold both fragility and strength at the same time.
As we traverse this most wintery of winters, let’s look at best ways to surf — or sled — ahead.
